Describing the main features and grades of Flat wire

Flat wire is usually a round wire which is further flattened, rolled, or die drawn to form a flat cross section and meet the requirements by going through a sequence of operations. Among the available flat wires manufacturers, Matta Drawing is the specialist among for customer requirements solutions. The flat wire types offered by us are used in various applications where the topmost levels of precision are needed such as medical, automobile, textile, cable, and spring industries.

The main features of flat wire includes burr free edges, continuous coiling with lesser welds, close dimensional tolerances, and availability in custom edge types. Flat wire can be categorized in mainly 4 types: MS flat wire, SS flat wire, and spring steel flat wire. The main features and various grades of the above mentioned types are described below.

Features of Flat wires

MS Flat Wire

·         MS flat wire has high ductility and weldability properties.

·         They have high impact and tensile strength.

·         Due to high ferric content, MS flat wire undergoes the properties of a magnetic metal.

·         It is not suitable for heat treatment to improve the properties.

·         Have excellent cold forming properties and high malleability.

SS Flat Wire

·         SS flat wire has resistance to high temperatures.

·         They have high yield and tensile strength.

·         SS flat wire also has resistance to cryogenic conditions therefore can hold onto and function in low temperatures.

·         Most stainless steel grades offer high ductility that allows the use of deep drawing processes.

·         Higher work hardening rate.

·         Resistance to high oxidation conditions.

·         SS flat wires being biologically inert, are used in the manufacturing of medical equipments like surgical tools, plates, etc.

·         Stainless steel is resistance to bases, acids, and organic materials.

Spring steel flat wire

·         Spring steel flat wire have high yield strength, therefore they are known to be pliable and resilient.

·         Flat wire made of spring steel has the unique ability to get deformed, treated, and shaped post heating.

·         Spring steel flat wire is also known as general use steel flat wire due to its unique properties.

 

Various Grades of flat wires

MS Flat Wire

EN 1.0301: EN 1.0301 is a type of mild steel grade that has 0.1% carbon, 0.4% manganese, and 0.4% silicon. This grade is commonly used for forged, cold pressed, extruded, and cold headed parts and forms and has excellent weldability.

EN 1.1121: EN 1.1121 is a type of mild steel grade that has carbon content ranging from 0.08% to 0.13% and manganese ranging from 0.3% to 0.6%. This grade is mainly used in the production of cold headed bolts and fasteners.

EN 1.0402: EN 1.0402 is a type of mild steel grade that has carbon content ranging from 0.018% to 0.23% and manganese ranging from 0.3% to 0.6%. Due to its excellent weldability, this grade is mainly used for carburized parts. This has excellent balance between toughness, ductility, and strength.

SS Flat Wire

200 Series: 200 series is mainly used for austenitic grades containing manganese. This series consists of chromium manganese steels with a lower nickel content of below 5 percent.  The major uses of 200 series include the manufacturing of cutlery, washing machines, automotive industry equipments, food and drinks equipments, and in-doors equipments.

300 Series: 300 series is mainly used for naming austenitic grades containing molybdenum, nickel, and carbon as the alloying materials. This series consists of molybdenum that increases resistance to corrosion in acidic environments. On the other hand, the availability of nickel content improves ductility. They are majorly used in the manufacturing of automotive industry equipments, medical instruments, jewellery, food and drinks equipments, etc.

400 Series: 400 series is mainly used for naming austenitic grades containing martensitic and ferritic alloys. These grades are available for heat treating and provide an excellent combination of high wear resistance and strength. The resistance to corrosion is lower than 300 series but is highly applicable in the manufacturing of gas turbine parts, agricultural equipments, and motor shafts.

Spring steel flat wire

AISI 1050: This type of spring steel flat wire has the lowest carbon content that makes it easily formable. In order to increase its hardness, these flat wires are passed through heat treatment.

AISI 1074 and 1075: These flat wires have medium carbon content and can be spheroidized to increase its formability and then heat treated.

AISI 1095: AISI 1095 has the highest carbon content among all spring steel types. It can be easily heat treated.  It also has the highest fatigue and elasticity values.
